Mom, why is pizza called junk food?

Have you ever observed your child when it comes to picking up some snacks? What does he/she pickup? Chips, cookies, burgers—so called junk food—or some fresh fruits? Does your child know the difference between healthy and unhealthy food?

“Junk food” is an informal term usually applied to some foods that contain high calories, sugar and saturated fat but lack in nutritional value provided by vitamins, minerals, proteins and amino acids. Hence they provide “empty calories” with unhealthy fat.

Our children are fascinated by junk food as it is easy to carry, purchase and consume. Also it’s often given an attractive appearance by adding food additives and colours making it appealing to children.

Does that mean we can’t prevent our children from consuming an excess of junk food? Of course, we can.

Today, childhood obesity is a major health concern because of unhealthy eating habits of children. In fact, junk food is one of the main reasons behind obesity in children, as overweight and obese conditions are a result of excessive body fat.

While fulfilling the temptations of your child, you should not overlook the significance of healthy meals over junk food, as healthy eating in childhood and adolescence is important for proper growth and development.
